The Fire Zouaves of the Civil War
Thursday, October 20th, Doors open at 6:30pm

Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, a long time Illinois resident and friend of Lincoln's answered the call to raise 75,000 Union soldiers at the onset of America's Civil War. When faced with the daunting challenge of raising a regiment of more than one-thousand men, Ellsworth responded, "I want the New York Firemen, for there are no more effective men in the country, and none with whom I can do so much.”

Learn how the volunteer firefighters of New York City were recruited and joined the Civil War en-mass to form two infantry regiments -- know as the 1st and 2nd New York Fire Zouave Regiments. and played some key roles in the war between the states.
